6. GEAR LIST
1. HEALING
Here's shortly listed the most important things you need to get started with any healer. The actual guide for how to make a priest starts below.
1.1. Prority list:
1. Tank(s)
2. Yourself & other healers
3. Dps without def. cooldowns
4. Dps with def. cooldowns
The priorities might change in some raids. Usually holy priests are aoe healing in big encounters and the list applies there too.
1.2. Your UI needs:
1. Health and power bars of all party/raid members
2. All debuffs visible, including non-dispellable ones
3. A focus frame for tank healing (for targetting and buffs)
4. Key bindings for all spells, dispels and combat tricks
5. You target showing all buffs as well as their target
1.3. Recommended addons:
1. Deadly Boss Mods
2. Quartz
2. TALENTS
Recommended talent tree:
PRIME: Prayer of Healing || Lightwell || Renew; (Flash Heal, Power Word: Shield)
MAJOR: Dispel Magic || Circle of Healing || Prayer of Mending; (Mass Dispel)
MINOR: Shadowfiend || Fading || Levitate; (Fortitude)
2.1. Why these talents/glyphs?
Many will want to skip Desperate Prayer and Lightwell. However Desperate Prayer is one of the best defensive spells priests have at their use. It costs no mana, takes no casting time and is available in almost every encounter. Trust me, it's a huge life saver.
Lightwell on the other hand is one of the most recommended spells in the game. It's basically ten free Renews whenever the group needs it the most, even when the healer itself isn't available (which happens a lot). It's so valuable many guides recommend increasing the number of charges from 10 to 15. If you want to try this go with Glyph of Lightwell instead of Glyph of Flash Heal.
Body and Soul (third highest tier) is a speed boost that's practically a must on encounters like Atramedes in BWD. It's also usefull on other bosses, letting you speed up yourself or tanks when they need it (see Rom'ogg, Ozruk, Slabhide). See Combat Tricks for longer explanation.
Glyph of Desperation might feel like a weird choise, but it's picked to save people on bosses where you aren't able to cast anything, like Ozruk. More about using Guardian Spirit is found in the Combat Tricks part. If you're not comfortable with using combat tricks like these replace it with Glyph of Dispel Magic.
2.2. Why not these talents/glyphs?
Renew is no longer spammed as in WotLK, making Rapid Renewal a waste of points. This effect is replaced by haste (see Gearing).
Spirit of Redemption is currently bugged on Molten. If you die in it you might get stuck and unable to move, requiring you to unstuck to get rid of it. When this talent works the point will be taken from Improved Power Word: Shield in the Disc tree.
I've seen Blessed Resilience recommended in some guides, but the points are taken from Body and Soul, which is a bad thing with current raids. You can try having one point in it if you feel like it, but I wouldn't put much focus on it.
Divine Hymn used to be a really strong channeled ability in WotLK, but with it's current spellpower rates I recommend never casting it. This makes Heavenly Voice is a talent you never want to spend points on.
Improved Power Word: Shield can be used if you have enough points for it, especially when used together with the glyph. In raids shielding should however be left to Disc priest, which means you don't actually want to spec to it in the long run. The talent & glyph can be used while healing dungeons (replace Glyph of Flash Heal if you do).
Some will have noticed that I'm not recommending Glyph of Circle of Healing. The reason is it's not a strong spell anymore, and the mana cost of instant spells are high enough as it is in Cataclysm. The mana cost/healing rate is a negative gain compared to using Glyph of Dispel Magic or Glyph of Mass Dispel instead.
3. ROTATION
castbar: [1] shield, [2-7] single target heals & Holy Word, [8-0] aoe spells, [+] panic button (self), [ยด] Fade
shift+ [1] Chakra, [2-4] dispels, [5] Lightwell
ctrl+ [1] panic button (tank), [3-5] rarely used spells
elsewhere: Shadowfiend (bottom), buffs (right down corner)
mousewheel: Nitro Boost
3.1. Single target spell priority (Serenity):
1. Chakra
2. Heal / Flash Heal / Binding / Greater Heal (procs Serenity)
3. Holy Word: Serenity
4. Heal 2x
5. Renew (only first time)
6. Power Word: Shield
Variation for heavy damage (4.): 2x Flash Heal, 1x Greater Heal
Variation if you take much damage (4.): 2x Binding Heal, 1x Greater Heal
Note: Renew and Shield are filler spells and mostly used on the tank
3.2. Aoe spell priority (Sanctuary):
1. Chakra
2. Prayer of Mending (procs Sanctuary)
3. Holy Word: Sanctuary (place under raid)
4. Circle of Healing
5. Prayer of Healing
(6. Flash Heal x2 / Binding Heal x2)
Note: Step 6. is for making the casting time of Prayer of Healing faster. However the overall casting time is more than just hardcasting Prayer of Healing. Pick between these too depending on how fast you need aoe and whether some group members are much lower hp than others (tip: the rotation works well on Chimaeron for tank+aoe healing).
3.3. Typical problems:
The Chakra mechanic is a bit hard to grasp before trying it out the first time. Chakra in itself isn't a healing spell, but it makes you enter one of two states depending on what spell you cast next.
You might have two different Chakra buffs on you your Holy Word might bug out and stop working completely. A quick fix for this is to right click one of the buffs, which will return you to either Serenity or Sanctuary, whichever you left.
Your Renew is likely going to fall or your targets many times. Try to keep it up on the tank for 100% of the time, while filling in on party members when they're taking damage. Remember Renew only renews when you are in the Serenity state and when you cast a single target heal on the target.
4. COMBAT TRICKS
Leap of Faith: Drags the targetted party member to you. This works also if they're on a different level than you, or falling through the air, as long as they're in your range. Can be used to save the tank from spikes on Ozruk or returning the tank to the platform on Anhuur. Be very carefull while dragging someone over aoe, since some flames for example will hurt them even in the air.
Guardian Spirit: Usable once an encounter to save an important person, usually a tank. Increases all healing received on the target by 60% and prevents them from dying for 10 seconds. With the glyph this is also used while stunned. In raids this also means all healers heal more, not only you.
Lightwell: Restores some 15k+ health to the one clicking it over 6 seconds. It's worth two of your Heals or one Flash Heal by click, and is practically a must in most encounters. It's best in light aoe encounters (Anhuur, for example) and not as strong in heavy ones (Rajh, Chimaeron) because it will fade when you've taken damage for 30% of your max hp.
Power Word: Shield: Becomes a speed boost with the talent Body and Soul. The target's movement speed is increated by 60% for 4 seconds, which is enough to get them into safety from almost all aoes you meet. I use this a lot on myself to be able to move as fast as possible to wherever I need to be. It's also very useful to giving tanks more time to get aggro when pulling.
Hymn of Hope: Returns a lot of mana to three party members with the lowest mana. This means you want to use it only when you're sure you're in the lowest three. The channeling time is fairly long, so pick your timing carefully. It's important to shield yourself first to reduce pushback in aoe encounters.
5. GEARING
Int > Spirit > Haste (12.5%) > Crit (~10%) > Mastery
5.1. How it works:
Intellect: Your Intellect is mainly passive and comes with better gear, although gemming it is very important.
Spirit: Spirit is what keeps you casting, so you stack as much of it as you're able to.
Haste: Haste is nearly useless when it comes to shortening your casting times. However at 12.5% haste your Renew tics will be faster. This amount of haste also makes your other casts ~0.2 seconds faster.
Crit: The T11 2-set bonus increases your Heal crits by 5%. In addition Holy Word: Serenity adds a 25% crit buff on your target for 5 seconds (2 spells, 21 sec cooldown). There are no crit procs in the priest build, so I recommend going for mastery after 10% base crit or so. Note: This also affects choosing trinkets. Avoid crit procs!
Mastery: One point (~180) mastery increases your healing done with 1.25%. Although it could be put before crit in priority it affects the survival of the group the least. In short, this is the stat you start stacking when you have 12.5% haste and 10% crit.
5.2. Base rule for reforging:
Mastery => Spirit
Crit => Haste
5.3. Enchants:
Head: +60 Int, +35 Crit (Guardians of Hyjal)
Shoulders: +50 Int, +25 Haste (Therazane)
Back: Darkglow Embroidery (580 Spirit, Tailoring) or +50 Int
Chest: +40 Spirit
Wrist: +50 Spirit
Hands: +50 Haste
Waist: Ebonsteel Belt Buckle (+40 Spirit, BS)
Legs: +95 Int, +55 Spirit (Tailoring)
Feet: +50 Haste
Weapon: Heartsong (200 Spirit)
Off-Hand: +40 Int
5.4. Gems:
Ember Shadowspirit Diamond: +54 Int, +2% Maximum Mana
Revitalizing Shadowspirit Diamond: +54 Spirit, 3% Increased Critical Effect
Sparkling Ocean Sapphire: +40 Spirit
Brilliant Inferno Ruby: +40 Int
Quick Amberjewel: +40 Haste
Purified Demonseye: +20 Int, +20 Spirit
Reckless Ember Topaz: +20 Int, +20 Haste
6. GEAR LIST
Note: The T11 4-piece set bonus is worth more than having all BiS items. You should try to go with 2 set pieces, then gather the rest until you have the full set. In most cases 3 set pieces will not be a good idea.
